Some Online Statistics:
Aussies set to spend $10 Billion Online by 2016:
(Kim Christian AAP - 17 Oct, 2011)
The amount of money Australians spend online is expected to swell to about $10billion over the next five years, prompting large and small stores to position themselves for a piece of the pie.
But while the ease and security of online shopping has improved markedly in recent years, experts say consumer behaviour is still changing as people reassess what they are prepared to buy on the web.
Faster parcel delivery speeds are also likely to attract more shoppers, leading to a boost in sales over the next decade.
This week, Australia Post cited growth in online shopping as the major driver behind its increase in annual profit, while traditional mail volumes declined.
The government-owned corporation predicts online spending on its delivery services will double over the next five years, with parcel revenue tipped to reach almost $2billion by 2015.
It comes amid heady forecasts by IBIS World, which issued research showing revenue to Australian online retailers is expected to increase by 8.6 per cent per year over the next five years to $10billion.
Australian Retailers' Association president Russell Zimmerman said growth in online retailing, which makes up 5-6 per cent of total sales in Australia, was leading to large shifts in the industry.
''As speed of delivery becomes better and there's more competition in that area within the parcel delivery service, I think we'll see internet retailing evolve and become stronger and change its direction,'' Mr Zimmerman said.
In more mature markets like the United States, online retailing accounts for about 12 per cent of sales.
Figures showing 70 per cent of Australia Post parcels purchased online were mailed in Australia indicated that people were comfortable shopping domestically.
''There will be consumers who will want to buy from local suppliers rather than from overseas to get that certainty that they can return the item ... and there are people that feel that buying from Australia now, you are probably fairly right giving your credit card numbers,'' Mr Zimmerman said.
But he said there was no one-size-fits-all and that smaller domestic retailers had adapted more quickly than their larger cousins.
Some bricks-and-mortar stores were reinventing themselves by moving completely online and cutting costs, while others had embraced multichannel retailing.
Categories such as cameras, musical equipment, footwear, clothing and books were positioned for good growth.
IBIS World said strong consumer demand and an increase in the number of goods available online had characterised the growth in online shopping over the past five years. ''The growth is expected to continue over the five years through 2016-17,'' IBIS World said.
The researcher also said the rise in operators would be fuelled by expansion in the range of products, services and bricks-and-mortar stores.
Meanwhile, Australia Post has named electronics retailer JB Hi-Fi as one of its key domestic online clients, as well as eBay, Deals Direct, Grays Online and Catch of the Day.
Australia Post chief executive Ahmed Fahour said an 11 per cent annual increase in parcel volumes was likely to continue as online retailing in Australia grew at a ''rapid rate''.
Official retail figures issued earlier this month show retail spending rose 0.6 per cent in August.
It contrasts with the grim outlook painted by retailers during earnings season last month.
While it warns of a tough period ahead, JB Hi-Fi said last week that online sales increased by 68 per cent in the second half of fiscal 2011.
And it comes a month after retailer Harvey Norman said it would start an online shopping presence, seven years after it made its last attempt to drive online sales.
Chief executive Gerry Harvey believes competition from overseas websites poses only a tiny threat..
Aussies' online spending tops
Annual online spending reached a record high with total online spending in Australia totalling $11.35 billion in the 12 months to June 2006, or around $1,900 annually per shopper, a report by market research company ACNielsen has revealed.
Online shoppers cited price, convenience and selection as the main motivators for shopping online, although this varied by retailer.
The report findings also indicated that negativity towards online shopping was quickly declining with only six percent of respondents hesitant to shop online – down 18 percentage points from two years ago.
Australia has one of the world’s highest incidence of consumer purchases online and was ranked in the top 15 countries around the world and in the top five countries in the Asia Pacific region, a global study by research company ACNielsen has found.
“Our ongoing e-commerce research clearly demonstrates an upward trend in Australian and global online shopping,” says Richard Sandlant, Director, Customised Research, ACNielsen Australia. “In fact, we’ve noticed higher than usual growth in activity in Australia within the past six month, mostly due to the increasing number of consumers with access to broadband and wireless services from home.”
The survey found that the vast majority of Australian Internet users (87%) had made a purchase over the Internet, compared to the global average of 77 percent and 70 percent regionally. In addition, 53 percent of Australian respondents said they had made their last online purchase less than a month ago, and the majority of these (81%) had made multiple purchases within the past month. Overall, Australians had averaged five purchases in the previous month.
